The natural beauty of our land draws many visitors to canoeing or boating on the famed Wabash River. The mighty Wabash is a 503-mile-long natural resource that drains most of the state of Indiana in the United States and it borders the entire 37-mile length of Vermillion County. The Wabash is the state river of Indiana, and subject of the state song “On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away” by Paul Dresser.

Our communities appreciate large gatherings, and our annual events draw visitors from throughout the Midwest. Clinton’s Little Italy Festival, held since 1966, celebrates the food and culture of the ancestral home of many of our residents and is held over the four-day Labor Day weekend, and antique auto aficionados put their affectionately restored vehicles to the test at the three-day Newport Antique Auto Hill Climb.  Parke County’s celebrated Covered Bridge Festival is just minutes away.

Your visit to Vermillion County will not be complete without visiting the Ernie Pyle World War II Museum named after the Pulitzer Prize winner.  Located in the west-central Indiana town of Dana, the site features Ernie Pyle’s birthplace and a museum highlighting the famous journalist’s life and writings as a correspondent during World War II.  The historic site is owned and operated by the Friends of Ernie Pyle, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Pyle’s legacy in Dana, as well as throughout Indiana and the nation.

Besides our abundant amount of nature and impressive events and historic sites, we are also home to the Historic Newport Jail.  You can also visit our impressive wineries of TJ Hasse Winery and Windy Ridge Winery & Distillery, Brooke’s Naturals & Candy Shop, or several of our popular covered bridges.

These are a few of the reasons why you will quickly understand why people love Vermillion County. Your adventure in all seasons is waiting here for you to come and enjoy!
